Campy had a great career and was finishing up with the Yankees in 1983 (he had spent the previous year in the Mexican League) when he autographed this card for me in the lobby of the team’s hotel in Kansas City. He was looking real sharp in a blue plaid sportscoat. As they say, a class act.
On September 8, 1965, Campaneris became the first player to play every position in a major league game. On the mound, he pitched ambidextrously, throwing lefty to left-handers, and switched against right-handers.
In the background you can see the frieze that lined the roof of the original Yankee Stadium from 1923-1973.
